Like Martin Luther King, Jr., I have a dream. But it's not just that little boys and girls of all colors are treated equally... it's that they attend equal schooling with equal training and education.
In the future - just 5 years from now - most school districts will be assigning work via the computer one way or another. That's inevitable as we live in a digital age. But I worry that some classrooms will be more equal than others. The wealthier schools district like HPISD haev access to technological equipment that DISD won't have, that's just the world we live in. Robin Hood and other programs try to level the playing field, and that seems to work fairly well. Obviously, Robin Hood's not perfect, otherwise the law wouldn't have a nickname. (No law with a nickname is trouble-free.)
In 2010, HPISD has hardly any technological advantage over IISD, where I work. But what about DISD and other low-income areas? I'm deeply troubled by the thought 18-year-old Dallas students being unfamiliar with basic programs like search engines, web browsers, spreadsheets and databases, while 12-year-old students from a wealthier area are light-years ahead.
The only way to combat inequity is to inform the public. No person with a beating heart would allow terrible inequities to occur. No person who's ever heard MLK Jr. would allow for a low-socioeconomic area to receive a poor education.
